With the new app, Microsoft is entering into Google territory - the search giant has long offered translation services on the Web as well as for iOS and Android. But this is the first expansion of Microsoft's translation app to the world of iOS and Android mobile devices and smartwatches. The company also offers translation through its Skype Translator program, which is soon due to become part of the Skype app itself. Microsoft has already been serving up language translation via its Bing website along with apps for its Windows Phone mobile operating system and its Windows 10 desktop software. At this point, Microsoft Translator supports 50 different languages, including English, Chinese, French, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Spanish and Russian.
You can also and copy and paste text from and to other apps for translation. In response, the app shows you the translated text on the screen and then speaks it for you. You can type or speak the word or phrase you want translated. The app supports phones and tablets as well as the Apple Watch and smartwatches that run Android Wear, Google's adaptation of its mobile software for wearables. While tests and demonstrations have been in limited and controlled experiments, Microsoft’s move today opens up its Skype Translator to a much wider audience to test it in the real world.Watch out, Google. Skype is already popular in the classroom, with teachers participating in videoconferences to connect their schools to classrooms across the globe. Microsoft is marketing Skype Translator as a tool for schools, and the company tested it out with students in the United States and Mexico. Microsoft previously demonstrated the technology working between English and German, but Spanish will be the only language outside of English that will be initially supported during the preview. An English speaker will hear a translation from a Spanish speaker, and vice versa. Skype Translator Preview works on Windows 8.1 or preview copies of Windows 10, and it works by translating voice input from an English or Spanish speaker into text and translated audio. It sounds like magic, but it’s the result of years of work from Microsoft’s research team and Skype to provide an early working copy of software that could help change the way the world communicates in the future. As part of a preview program, Skype Translator makes it possible for English and Spanish speakers to communicate in their native languages, without having to learn the other one. Microsoft’s Skype software today will start translating voice calls.
